Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced he will meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday, amid ongoing tensions from Trump’s trade policies and threats to Canadian sovereignty.
Carney, following his party’s surprising election win, emphasized Canada’s commitment to stand up to Trump and strengthen its economy.
He also highlighted that King Charles III will address Parliament on May 27, underlining Canada’s sovereignty.
Carney stressed that the era of close U.S.-Canada relations is over and vowed to fight for the best deal for Canada.
Some experts caution against meeting Trump, suggesting Carney risks further insult, the Associated Press has reported.
Carney also outlined his government’s priorities, with plans for a new Cabinet and swift action on election matters.
