An Illinois man, Joseph Czuba, was sentenced to 53 years in prison for fatally stabbing 6-year-old Palestinian-American Wadee Alfayoumi and seriously injuring the boy’s mother in a hate-fueled 2023 attack.

Prosecutors said Czuba targeted the family because they were Muslim, amid the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas.

He was convicted of all charges, including murder, attempted murder, and hate crimes.

The boy’s mother testified that Czuba attacked them while shouting anti-Muslim slurs, ABC News has reported.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations welcomed the sentence as a measure of justice.
