At his second-degree murder trial, former Michigan officer Christopher Schurr testified that he feared for his life when he fatally shot Patrick Lyoya in the back of the head during a 2022 struggle after a traffic stop.
Schurr said he was exhausted and believed Lyoya, who had grabbed his Taser, might use it against him.
Prosecutors questioned the necessity of deadly force, pointing out Lyoya made no threats and was pinned when shot.
Experts were split, with some calling the shooting reasonable, while others argued it was excessive, the Associated Press has reported.
Schurr was fired after being charged, and the case remains highly contested.
