South Korea appointed Education Minister Lee Ju-ho as its third acting president in six months after Prime Minister Han Duck-soo stepped down to run in the June 3 snap election.
Han’s candidacy adds uncertainty to a race already shaken by legal troubles facing frontrunner Lee Jae-myung, whose acquittal on election law violations was overturned.
The election was triggered by the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol over a brief martial law declaration in December, Al-Jazeera has reported.
Han, a veteran politician, pledged to limit executive power if elected, but faces criticism from opponents for abandoning his caretaker role.
