An 89-year-old Florida man, Robert Markel, and his dog were killed in separate bear attacks near his home in Jerome, possibly involving multiple bears, according to state wildlife officials.
The attacks, which occurred Monday near Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area, may be the first fatal bear attack in Florida’s history.
Authorities have since killed three bears in the area and are conducting DNA tests to determine involvement, ABC News has reported.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is investigating and continues to monitor bear activity while urging the public to avoid the area for safety.
