Pakistan official says two Indian jets shot down after India missile attack

Tensions between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan have sharply escalated after India launched missile strikes on what it called “terrorist camps” in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, in response to a deadly militant attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir that killed 26 people.

Pakistan says the strikes hit civilian areas, killing eight, and retaliated by shooting down five Indian planes and launching its own strikes.

Both sides deny targeting military facilities, while Pakistan’s Prime Minister called the attack an “act of war,” Sky News has reported.

The UN has urged restraint, warning of the dangers of full-scale conflict.
