US jury acquits three Memphis police officers in Tyre Nichols beating death

A U.S. jury has acquitted three former Memphis police officers—Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith—of all state charges in the 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man.

The officers had previously faced federal charges and were convicted only of witness tampering.

Nichols died three days after being violently beaten by five officers, sparking national outrage and renewed scrutiny of police brutality.

The SCORPION unit, to which all five officers belonged, was later disbanded, Al-Jazeera has reported.

Nichols’s family called the verdict a “devastating miscarriage of justice.”
