Former President Donald Trump has announced a $175 billion “Golden Dome” missile defense project, aiming to create a next-generation shield over the U.S. using space-based interceptors to defend against hypersonic and advanced aerial threats.
The system would take about three years to develop, though experts warn the true cost could exceed $500 billion.
Led by U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein, the project has drawn criticism from China for its offensive potential, while Russia called it a sovereign U.S. decision, Space.com has reported.
Inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome and Reagan’s “Star Wars” initiative, Golden Dome seeks to complete Reagan’s vision of a space-based missile defense system.
