Jorge Humberto Figueroa, a leader of a Sinaloa cartel faction with a $1 million US bounty, was killed in a clash with Mexican army troops on Friday, authorities said.
The Sinaloa state, home to the cartel, has seen ongoing violence between rival factions, with 1,200 deaths since September.
Figueroa was involved in a 2019 clash after the arrest of Ovidio Guzman, son of cartel founder Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
Ovidio was controversially released but re-arrested in 2023, Barron’s has reported.
Figueroa was reportedly the security chief for Guzman’s sons’ faction, which has been fighting rivals led by Ismael Zambada’s heirs.
