Twelve men were stabbed Sunday evening at the Union Gospel Mission, a homeless shelter in Salem, Oregon.
The suspect, 42-year-old Tony Latrell Williams from Bend, was arrested at the scene.
Authorities said there was no indication the attack was premeditated.
Williams had stayed at the shelter the night before and allegedly became violent during check-in for a second night. Five victims remain in critical condition.
The victims included staff and shelter guests, ranging in age from 26 to 57. Williams faces 12 counts of second-degree assault, The Guardian has reported.
The shelter, which helps the unhoused through Christian outreach, temporarily closed following the incident.
