Brazil braces for Bolsonaro’s day in court as ex-president testifies over ‘coup plot’

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is set to appear before the Supreme Court this week, accused of leading a far-right conspiracy to overturn the 2022 election results and stay in power.

Bolsonaro and seven alleged co-conspirators, including top former officials and military leaders, face accusations of plotting to arrest or kill political rivals and stage a coup after his defeat by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Experts widely expect Bolsonaro to be convicted, though it’s unclear if he’ll serve time, The Guardian has reported.

Despite being barred from running, Bolsonaro remains influential, with several allies seen as potential 2026 presidential contenders.
