French President Emmanuel Macron visited Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, becoming the first foreign leader to do so since former President Trump’s threats to annex the territory.
Macron condemned the idea of using force to acquire Greenland, emphasizing France and the EU’s support for Greenland’s sovereignty.
Welcomed by Danish and Greenlandic leaders, Macron held talks focused on Arctic security, climate change, and European cooperation with respect for Greenland’s independence.
His visit, invited by Danish and Greenlandic authorities, contrasts with the controversial reception of US Vice President JD Vance earlier this year, Radio France International has reported.
Greenland, rich in resources and strategically located, seeks independence from Denmark but not US control, as Arctic geopolitics intensify amid climate change and military competition.
