Death toll from an attack by gunmen in north-central Nigeria reaches 150

The death toll from a weekend attack in Yelewata, Benue state, Nigeria has risen to 150, according to survivors, as villagers continue to search through burned homes for victims and missing persons.

Armed assailants opened fire and set homes ablaze late Friday, targeting residents, many of whom had fled previous violence.

No group has claimed responsibility, but such attacks are often linked to ongoing clashes between herders and farmers over land and water access, the Associated Press has reported.

President Bola Tinubu condemned the attack as “senseless bloodletting” and plans to visit the area.
