Tens of millions swelter as heatwave blankets the central and eastern US

A dangerous and prolonged heatwave is gripping much of the central and eastern U.S., with extreme heat warnings in effect through midweek.

Cities including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. could see temperatures near or above 100°F (38°C), with heat index values reaching up to 115°F (46°C) due to high humidity.

Record-breaking highs were reported over the weekend in several states.

Nighttime temperatures in the 70s–80s°F are offering little relief, increasing health risks, The Guardian has reported.

Officials are urging precautions, calling it the deadliest weather threat for cities like New York.
