Two firefighters were killed and another critically injured in northwest Idaho on Sunday when a gunman allegedly set a brush fire on Canfield Mountain and ambushed the responding crew.
The suspect was later found dead nearby with a gun.
Authorities described the attack as intentional and “heinous.”
The fallen firefighters, one a 17-year veteran, were from the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue, NBC News has reported.
The tragedy has deeply shocked the local community, and police will now accompany firefighters on calls for safety.
