Bryan Kohberger pleads guilty to murder after admitting to brutal stabbing deaths of 4 Idaho students

Bryan Kohberger, a former criminal justice graduate student, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students.

The attack shocked the small community of Moscow, Idaho, and sparked a nationwide manhunt that ended with Kohberger’s arrest in Pennsylvania.

As part of a plea deal, Kohberger will avoid the death penalty but will serve four life sentences without the possibility of appeal.

The sentencing is scheduled for July 23.

Prosecutors said Kohberger fatally stabbed Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves first, then killed Xana Kernodle and her boyfriend Ethan Chapin.

DNA evidence from a knife sheath linked him to the crime, PBS has reported.

Despite months of investigation, no clear motive or personal connection to the victims has been established.

Some families expressed relief at avoiding a lengthy trial, while others called for a full confession and details of the crime.

The judge must still formally approve the plea deal.
