A new book, 2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America, describes First Lady Jill Biden’s growing influence as President Joe Biden’s political fortunes declined.
The authors say Jill Biden emerged as a powerful, protective figure who encouraged Biden to stay in the 2024 race even after a disastrous debate against Donald Trump raised concerns about his age and cognitive fitness.
Her top aide, Anthony Bernal, also gained sway in the administration, clashing with other advisers and staying close to Jill Biden throughout.
The book details how the first lady defended Hunter Biden during his trial, managed her husband’s schedule, and pushed back against staff she felt mishandled events—all while Democratic leaders pressured Biden to drop out, Fox News has reported.
Despite these efforts, Biden ultimately ended his re-election campaign less than a month after the debate, endorsing Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
