More than 30 construction workers were safely rescued after a partial tunnel collapse in Los Angeles trapped them about 400 feet underground.

The cave-in happened between the tunnel boring machine, located 5 miles from the entrance, and workers 6 miles in, forcing them to scramble over 12 feet of loose soil to reach safety.

Aerial footage showed the workers being lifted out in a yellow cage hoisted by a crane, with none suffering major injuries.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass praised first responders and confirmed all workers were safe and reunited with family members, Fox News has reported.

The tunnel is part of a $700 million, 7-mile project to carry treated wastewater to the Pacific Ocean; work is paused while the cause of the collapse is investigated.
