9 dead in Massachusetts assisted living facility fire described as ‘unfathomable tragedy’

Nine people died after a fire broke out Sunday night at Gabriel House, an assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts.

Residents trapped by smoke screamed for help from windows as firefighters worked to rescue them.

About 30 people were hospitalized, one in critical condition.

Officials said the cause does not appear suspicious but is under investigation.

Concerns have been raised about staffing levels impacting the response, CNN has reported.

Several firefighters were also treated for minor injuries.
