Feds reportedly will announce plan to reopen Alcatraz as a prison

Trump administration officials Attorney General Pam Bondi and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum visited Alcatraz Island Thursday to begin plans to reopen the former prison for housing dangerous criminals and undocumented immigrants.

Burgum confirmed the visit on social media, calling it part of restoring “safety, justice, and order.”

President Trump first proposed the idea in May, but experts warn the project could cost billions, as Alcatraz was closed in 1963 due to high operating costs, NBC Bay Area has reported.

The plan has drawn sharp criticism, with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie calling it unrealistic and Nancy Pelosi denouncing it as a political distraction and “absurdity.”
