A 13-year-old boy drowned in Mt. Airy, Maryland on Thursday after being swept into a drainage pipe during a sudden rainstorm.
The child, who lived nearby, was caught in strong floodwaters near an apartment complex and pulled into an overflowing storm drain.
Emergency crews recovered his body from the drain, which had rapidly filled due to torrential rain.
Neighbors and first responders described the current as extremely strong and criticized the lack of protective grates near the drain, CBS News has reported.
Widespread flash flooding impacted parts of Maryland, leading to multiple rescues and property damage.
Authorities urged residents to take weather warnings seriously.
