Trump deploys National Guard to D.C., takes control of local police in crime crackdown

President Trump announced Monday that he is federalizing Washington, D.C.’s police force for up to 30 days and deploying 800 National Guard troops to address what he called a public safety emergency.

Invoking Section 740 of the D.C. Home Rule Act, Trump placed the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control, citing high-profile crimes and pledging to remove homeless encampments.

Mayor Muriel Bowser called the move “unsettling and unprecedented” but said the city would comply, CBS News has reported.
