Canada’s Conservative leader projected to win Parliament seat

Canada’s Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is projected to win a by-election in Alberta’s Battle River-Crowfoot riding, securing a return to Parliament after losing his Ottawa-area seat in April.

Preliminary results show him leading with 80.4% of the vote in a race with a record 214 candidates.

The election was triggered after former MP Damian Kurek stepped aside for Poilievre, the BBC has reported.

The victory allows him to rejoin the House of Commons this autumn, though he faces a mandatory party leadership review in January.
