Maine police officer detained by Ice agrees to leave US

Jon Luke Evans, a Jamaican-born reserve police officer in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, has agreed to voluntarily leave the U.S. after being arrested by immigration authorities in July.

ICE said Evans overstayed his visa and unlawfully tried to purchase a firearm.

His arrest sparked tensions between the town and federal officials, as local authorities said DHS had previously confirmed his work eligibility through E-Verify, The Guardian has reported.

By choosing voluntary departure, Evans can leave at his own expense rather than face deportation.
