Erik Menendez was denied parole Thursday, 36 years after he and his brother Lyle killed their parents.
The parole board cited his prison misconduct—including drug smuggling, violence, illegal cellphone use, and inappropriate behavior with visitors—as well as the lack of empathy shown in his crimes.
Erik, 54, attended the nearly 10-hour hearing via video and was told he could next be eligible in three years.
Despite support from relatives praising his growth and remorse, the board concluded he still poses an “unreasonable risk” to public safety.
Lyle Menendez’s parole hearing is scheduled for Friday, ABC News has reported.
Both brothers had been resentenced to 50 years to life earlier this year, making them eligible for parole under youth offender laws.
