A North Carolina election official, James Yokeley Jr., resigned after being arrested for allegedly putting illegal drugs—later identified as MDMA and cocaine—into ice cream his granddaughters were eating.
The girls did not consume the drugs. Police reviewed video showing Yokeley placing the substances in the ice cream.
He was charged with contaminating food with a controlled substance, felony child abuse, and possession of a Schedule I narcotic, and posted a $100,000 bond, CBS News has reported.
Yokeley had recently been appointed to lead the Surry County Board of Elections and stated he remains confident he will be exonerated.
