An 85-year-old man was killed and his 82-year-old wife injured when a herd of cows trampled them while hiking with their dog in Austria’s Ramsau am Dachstein.

The couple was taken to a Salzburg hospital, where the man died before surgery.

Local authorities are investigating, pending an autopsy, CBS News has reported.

Fatal cow attacks are rare in Austria, which has issued hiking safety guidelines to avoid such incidents.
