Johnson and Jeffries kick off funding tango with talk of a holiday punt

House leaders are privately discussing delaying the government funding deadline by a month or two to avoid a shutdown in four weeks.

Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have talked about extending funding into November or December, while GOP leaders explore both a short-term continuing resolution and a broader bipartisan deal.

Appropriators hope to pass select bills early, such as for Agriculture, Veterans Affairs, and military construction, while tacking a stopgap for the rest, Politico has reported.

Democrats, however, resist supporting partisan funding, citing concerns over unilateral cuts by the administration and pressure from their base.
