TV writer Graham Linehan’s arrest over social media posts sparks free speech outcry in the UK

Graham Linehan, co-creator of Father Ted and The IT Crowd, says he was arrested at Heathrow Airport over posts about transgender people that police allege incited violence.

Linehan, 57, has a history of controversial comments about trans women, including calling them violent criminals in women-only spaces.

He was released on bail with a ban on posting to X after being hospitalized for high blood pressure during questioning.

His arrest follows recent U.K. rulings restricting trans women’s access to single-sex spaces and has drawn criticism from Conservative MPs, the Associated Press has reported.

Linehan is also due in court this week on a separate charge of harassing a transgender woman, which he denies.
