Jamaican PM Andrew Holness wins rare third term in office

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has won a historic third term after his Labour Party secured 34 seats, defeating the opposition People’s National Party, which won 29.

Holness, 53, campaigned on lowering income taxes and was credited with reducing the country’s homicide rate to a 25-year low.

The election focused on crime and the economy, with Labour highlighting a low 3.3% unemployment rate, while the opposition criticized government spending and questioned Holness’s integrity, the BBC has reported.

Voter turnout was 39.5%, and international observers praised the election as calm and orderly.
