The Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook following two referral letters from Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte concerning her properties in Georgia and Michigan.
Investigators are issuing subpoenas and convening grand juries in both states.
The probe comes amid President Trump’s effort to fire Cook “for cause,” which she is legally challenging. Pulte alleges Cook falsified property records and bank documents, claims her attorneys call politically motivated.
Trump attempted to remove Cook after the referrals, but she denies wrongdoing and has sued to block her firing.
A second referral accuses her of making false representations about a Massachusetts apartment, ABC News has reported.
Pulte had planned a press conference on the matter but later canceled, citing respect for the process.
