The Dearborn Heights Police Department in Michigan has unveiled a new optional uniform patch—the first in the United States—to feature both English and Arabic script.
Designed by Officer Ermily Murdoc, the patch includes the Michigan state seal and is intended to honor the city’s significant Middle Eastern and North African community.
Dearborn Heights has a 39% population of people from these backgrounds, while neighboring Dearborn stands at roughly 55%.
By introducing the Arabic-language patch, the department seeks to reflect and celebrate the cultural diversity of the residents it serves.
The initiative sparked conversation online, though comments were disabled on the department’s Facebook announcement, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit.
