Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, was fatally stabbed on a Charlotte light rail train on August 22 by 35-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., a career criminal with at least 14 prior arrests.
Surveillance footage shows Brown attacking Zarutska and calmly leaving the scene afterward.
Her death has drawn outrage over perceived silence from mainstream media and local politicians, including Charlotte’s Democratic mayor, while Republican officials criticized “soft-on-crime” policies.
Friends, family, and her employer mourned her tragic loss, the New York Post has reported.
Brown, who is homeless, was previously convicted of armed robbery and other offenses but was free at the time of the killing.
