Israel launched an airstrike in Doha, Qatar, targeting senior Hamas leaders, killing at least five members, including relatives of top negotiator Khalil al-Hayya.
Hamas claimed Israel failed to assassinate its negotiating team, which was discussing a new US ceasefire proposal.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the strike as justified against those behind the October 7, 2023 attacks, while Qatar condemned it as a violation of sovereignty and international law.
One Qatari security officer was killed.
The US called the attack “unfortunate” but said eliminating Hamas remained a goal, with President Trump assuring Qatar such strikes would not happen again.
The strike drew sharp condemnation from Qatar, the UN, and world leaders, who warned it could derail ceasefire talks and escalate regional tensions, the BBC has reported.
Families of Israeli hostages also expressed fear that the move endangered their loved ones.
