Supreme Court lets Trump freeze $4 billion in foreign aid

The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice John Roberts, ruled that the Trump administration can withhold $4 billion in foreign aid while the court considers an ongoing legal challenge.

The temporary order responds to an emergency filing against a federal judge’s ruling that the administration must release funds approved by Congress.

The case was brought by organizations including the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition and the Global Health Council, which sued over the freeze tied to Trump’s “America First” foreign policy and the restructuring of USAID.

Originally, the administration planned to spend $6.5 billion of the allocated aid and freeze the remaining $4 billion ahead of a September 30 congressional deadline, but a federal judge’s ruling prompted an emergency appeal, Axios has reported.

Chief Justice Roberts has set a deadline of Friday afternoon for the suing groups to respond, while the ultimate resolution of the case will determine whether the frozen funds are released.
