A moment of silence for conservative activist Charlie Kirk on the House floor turned into a shouting match between Republicans and Democrats on Wednesday.
The conflict began when Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) requested a prayer for Kirk following the moment of silence, prompting Democrats to shout in reference to a school shooting in Colorado that occurred the same afternoon.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) then accused Democrats of causing Kirk’s death, which led to a raucous response from Democrats, including Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-Conn.) demanding action on gun laws.
Lawmakers from both sides criticized the incident, with Rep. Susie Lee (D-Nev.) calling it a reminder to “turn the temperature down,” while Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) described the scene as “classless” and blamed members on both sides for escalating tensions, Axios has reported.
Democrats also argued that granting a prayer for Kirk would have violated House procedures, while Luna insisted Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) should allow a prayer, calling the Democrats’ objections “disgusting” and urging prayers for Kirk’s family.
