Tropical Storm Kiko was generating high surf and dangerous rip currents near Hawaii, even as it weakened north of the islands.
Forecasters from the National Hurricane Center said Kiko would continue passing north of the Hawaiian Islands on Tuesday and Wednesday, without an expected direct hit.
At the time, the storm had maximum sustained winds of around 40 mph and was located about 220 miles north of Hilo and 220 miles east-northeast of Honolulu.
Kiko was moving west-northwest at 14 mph, prompting forecasters to advise residents to monitor the storm in case conditions change, the Associated Press has reported.
Waves were expected to peak on Tuesday and Wednesday, with life-threatening surf and rip currents possible, though no coastal watches or warnings were issued.
