Suspect in custody after couple severely burned in ‘horrific double homicide’ in NYC: Police

A man suspected of murdering, robbing, and setting fire to an elderly Queens couple is now in custody, the NYPD announced.

The suspect, 42-year-old Jamel McGriff, was apprehended Wednesday evening near Times Square after authorities tracked his credit card and received real-time updates through a police messaging app.

Frank Olton, 76, was found tied to a pole in his basement with multiple stab wounds, while his wife, Maureen Olton, 77, was discovered severely burned on the first floor; their son, a firefighter, responded to the fire after an alarm alerted him.

There appears to be no connection between the victims and McGriff, who allegedly spent five hours in the home searching for valuables before setting it ablaze, and was previously on parole with a 30-year history of violent crimes, ABC News has reported.

Police urged the public to exercise caution, noting McGriff’s modus operandi of going door-to-door asking for assistance to gain entry, and emphasizing that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
