EU proposes suspension of trade concessions with Israel over Gaza war

The European Commission has proposed suspending certain trade provisions with Israel and imposing sanctions on far-right Israeli ministers, violent settlers, and Hamas in response to Israel’s war on Gaza.

The measures, which also pause most EU support to Israel while maintaining aid to civil society and Yad Vashem, cite breaches of human rights and democratic principles.

However, the proposals lack enough backing among the EU’s 27 member states to pass, as some countries favor economic curbs and arms embargoes while others oppose sanctions, Al-Jazeera has reported.

The move comes amid growing European protests and a U.N. finding that Israel’s actions in Gaza may constitute genocide.
