ICE agents involved in last week’s fatal shooting of 38-year-old Silverio Villegas González near Chicago were not wearing body cameras, a DHS official confirmed.
Villegas González, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was shot after allegedly resisting arrest and dragging an officer with his car, according to ICE.
The lack of bodycam footage has sparked outrage from family, advocates, and officials, with Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García demanding transparency, NBC News has reported.
The FBI’s Chicago field office is leading the investigation.
