Democrats are preparing to oppose a Republican stopgap funding bill, raising the possibility of a government shutdown ahead of the Sept. 30 deadline.

Party leaders, including Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, are demanding negotiations with Republicans on health care subsidies, Medicaid cuts, and other priorities, while Republicans insist the short-term funding bill leaves little room for policy changes.

Democrats released an alternative proposal extending funding through October with policy conditions, but unity within their caucus is uncertain, and some members may support the GOP measure, Politico has reported.

With only two weeks remaining, both sides are under pressure, and the outcome of potential shutdown talks remains unclear.
