EU calls for closer ties with India despite Modi’s links to Russia

The EU is seeking closer ties with India while acknowledging disagreements over Russia’s war in Ukraine, including India’s participation in Russian military exercises and purchases of discounted Russian oil.

EU officials, including Kaja Kallas and Maroš Šefčovič, stressed the need for a fair trade deal and stronger cooperation, but noted “clear areas of disagreement” with New Delhi.

Trade between the EU and India has grown significantly, making the bloc India’s largest trading partner, The Guardian has reported.

Meanwhile, the EU faces pressure from the U.S. to impose tariffs on India and China and is also working to phase out Russian fossil fuels by 2028, with Poland advocating an accelerated end by 2026.
