Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old Black college student, was found hanging from a tree on Delta State University’s campus in Mississippi, and his death has been ruled a suicide after an autopsy.
Police said the findings matched earlier investigations, which showed no evidence of foul play, though toxicology results are still pending.
Civil rights advocates and Reed’s family, represented by attorney Ben Crump, have demanded a transparent review given Mississippi’s history of racial violence.
Congressman Bennie Thompson called for federal involvement, and local authorities have turned case materials over to the FBI and U.S. attorney’s office for review, The Guardian has reported.
The university said multiple agencies are assisting in the investigation.
