Trump and Xi begin talks in a push to finalize a TikTok deal

President Donald Trump held a call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Friday to push for a deal allowing TikTok to continue operating in the U.S.

The discussion, beginning around 8 a.m. Washington time, also touched on broader trade issues and could indicate whether the leaders might meet in person to finalize agreements.

TikTok faces a U.S. ban unless its Chinese parent, ByteDance, sells its controlling stake, due to national security and data privacy concerns.

Officials said a framework deal on TikTok’s ownership was reached earlier this week, including arrangements for U.S. user data and algorithm management, the Associated Press has reported.

Trump emphasized TikTok’s value and expressed optimism about finalizing a deal, while Chinese officials highlighted the importance of heads-of-state diplomacy for guiding U.S.-China relations.
