President Donald Trump signed an executive action imposing a $100,000 application fee for H-1B visas to limit their use and encourage companies to hire American workers.
He also introduced a “gold card” program that would fast-track visas for foreigners who pay $1 million, or $2 million if sponsored by a company.
The measures aim to restrict access to foreign workers while prioritizing highly skilled or high-earning immigrants.
H-1B visas, widely used in the tech sector, are currently capped at 65,000 annually, with an additional 20,000 for advanced-degree holders, CNN has reported.
Critics warn the moves could significantly impact industries reliant on foreign talent, though the administration argues it ensures only top-tier workers enter the U.S. workforce.
