Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), reelected its leader, Özgür Özel, during a special congress on Sunday to preempt possible government efforts to replace its leadership.
The move comes amid accusations of electoral fraud from prosecutors, which the CHP calls politically motivated attempts by President Erdogan’s government to weaken the opposition.
The party has faced court interventions, arrests of municipal officials, and the removal of its Istanbul provincial leadership, while prominent figures like Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu remain in pre-trial custody on corruption charges, the Associated Press has reported.
