Spirit Airlines plans to furlough roughly 1,800 flight attendants—about a third of its cabin crew—as part of cost-cutting measures during its second bankruptcy in under a year.
The airline will first offer voluntary furloughs of six or 12 months, with affected employees retaining medical benefits, before moving to involuntary furloughs starting Dec. 1.
About 800 attendants are already on voluntary leave, but the company has reached the limit for additional volunteers.
Spirit has also furloughed pilots and is seeking $100 million in cost reductions from its aviators, CNBC has reported.
The airline’s union is working to help affected crew members secure interviews with other carriers.
