North Carolina legislature passes ‘Iryna’s Law’ after refugee’s stabbing death

Following the fatal stabbing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on Charlotte’s light rail, the North Carolina legislature passed a criminal justice bill aimed at limiting bail and increasing mental health evaluations for defendants.

The GOP-backed measure, nicknamed “Iryna’s Law,” also could allow the state to resume executions.

The bill eliminates cashless bail for many crimes and restricts judicial discretion in pretrial release.

Some Democrats criticized it for lacking mental health funding and preventive measures, CNN has reported.

Gov. Josh Stein is reviewing the bill, but a veto could likely be overridden.
