OpenAI, Oracle, SoftBank plan five new AI data centers for $500 billion Stargate project

OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank announced plans Tuesday to build five new AI data centers in the U.S. as part of the $500 billion Stargate project.

OpenAI will open three sites with Oracle in Texas, New Mexico, and an undisclosed Midwest location, while two additional centers will be built in Ohio and Texas with SoftBank.

The expansions, alongside existing projects, will bring Stargate’s capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts and more than $400 billion in investment over three years, aiming for a total 10-gigawatt capacity.

The initiative is expected to create 25,000 onsite jobs, with financing involving leased chips supplied by Nvidia, Reuters has reported.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that AI’s potential depends on building the necessary computing infrastructure, a priority fueled by competition with China and applications in sensitive sectors like defense.
