Super Typhoon Ragasa battered Hong Kong on Wednesday with fierce winds, flooding, and storm surges before moving toward southern China, where it is expected to make landfall along Guangdong’s coast.
The storm smashed glass doors at hotels, flooded residential areas, and forced the suspension of flights, trains, and ferry services, with more than 760 people sheltering in temporary facilities.
In Taiwan, at least 17 people died and 18 were injured after a lake barrier burst under Ragasa’s pounding rains, while the Philippines reported two deaths.
Authorities in mainland China ordered schools and businesses closed in at least 10 cities, evacuated residents from high-rises, and issued the highest red wave warning, The Guardian has reported.
Scientists warn that climate change is fueling increasingly powerful typhoons like Ragasa, which has disrupted daily life for tens of millions across the region.
